Emma Baccellieri is a staff writer at Sports Illustrated, where she primarily,
though not exclusively, covers baseball. She previously wrote for Baseball
Prospectus and Deadspin.
Dan Casey started at SIS in 2007 and is the Lead Analyst, Baseball Operations.
Before coming to SIS, Dan worked for the Yankees in several departments.
For over 25 years, SIS co-founder John Dewan has analyzed and published in-
depth baseball statistics and analysis. He has focused his baseball analytics work
on defense and has authored or co-authored five volumes of The Fielding Bible.
Chris Dial has been studying defensive statistics since 1996, and developed Runs
Effectively Defended (RED). RED was featured in Popular Science in 2008 as an
example of the future of defensive assessments. He has written predominantly at
Baseball Think Factory and currently at Mets360.com. He is a member of SABR's
SDI Committee, which plays a large role in the voting for the Gold Glove awards.
Alyson Footer is the executive editor of national content for MLB.com. She
began her career in media relations with the Astros before joining MLB.com in
2001 to cover the Astros as a beat reporter. She served as the Astros' social media
director from 2009-12 and then rejoined MLB.com as a national correspondent.
Peter Gammons is a senior writer for The Athletic, who regularly appears on
MLB Network. He is the 56th recipient of the J. G. Taylor Spink Award for
outstanding baseball writing given by the BBWAA.
Bill James is the lead author of this book, which is not to be taken to suggest that
he actually does a lot of the work. He has been inventing ways to measure things
about baseball professionally for almost a half of a century, and studies fielding as
intensely as he studies anything else. He no longer has any association with the
Boston Red Sox, but then a lot of people say that after a season like they just had.
Moses Massena has been with MLB Network since 2009 working as a
Researcher, Associate Producer, Segment Producer and as a Producer since 2019.
Moses has also done stats for FOX Baseball Telecasts from 2010-2017 and
ESPN Sunday Night Baseball from 2018 to 2021.
Eduardo Pérez played 13 seasons in the major leagues with 6 teams and was a
hitting coach with the Marlins and bench coach with the Astros. He is currently an
analyst on ESPN’s telecasts of Sunday Night Baseball and also works on the Little
League World Series and College World Series, and has broadcast MLB’s World
Series on ESPN Radio. His father, Tony Pérez, is a Baseball Hall of Famer.
The man who created Strat-O-Matic Baseball, Hal Richman, continues to lead
his company's annual in-depth analysis of each player's season. Hal cautions SOM
players that his voting on this ballot may or may not reflect the eventual fielding
ratings for players in his game. Ballots were due prior to the completion of his
annual research effort to evaluate player defense.
Travis Sawchik is a sportswriter for The Score. He is the author of the New York
Times best-selling book Big Data Baseball: Math, Miracles, and the End of a 20-
Year Losing Streak and co-author of The MVP Machine: How Baseball’s New
Nonconformists Are Using Data to Build Better Players. He previously covered
the Pittsburgh Pirates for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Bobby Scales began working at Sports Info Solutions as its VP of Baseball in
2022. He played pro baseball from 1999 to 2012, including two seasons with the
Chicago Cubs. After his playing career, he served as the Director of Player
Development and later, Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Angels.
Most recently, he served as the Minor League Field Coordinator and Coordinator
of Strategic Initiatives for Player Development for the Pirates.
Joe Sheehan publishes the Joe Sheehan Baseball Newsletter, one of the first
subscription baseball newsletters, now in its 13th season. He was a founding
member of Baseball Prospectus and has contributed to ESPN, Sports
Illustrated, Baseball America, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post,
and The New York Times in a 25-year career. No, you cannot find him on TikTok.

Mark Simon helps oversee SIS' public-facing content. He writes regularly for our
website and hosts The Sports Info Solutions Baseball Podcast. He previously
worked at ESPN for nearly 16 years, including 8 years on Baseball Tonight. He is
the author of the book The Yankees Index.
