Enhancements

Here’s a summary of enhancements we've made over the years:

2002

  • After years at the helm of Project Scoresheet and STATS inc. sabermetric pioneer, John Dewan, created Baseball Info Solutions to be the industry leader of in-depth and accurate data collection and analysis. BIS begins its pitch charting operation.
  • The “Bill James Profiles” are created: Over 45 analytical tools that quantify previously elusive data points including clutch hitting, record by inning for a team, and pitching ERA against quality of opposing team.

2004

  • Good Plays/Misplays: Began tracking good defensive plays and defensive misplays. Traditional scoring methods did not tell the whole story, so BIS created classifications for Good Fielding Plays and Defensive Misplays to add further layers of detail used to assess player and team performance.

2008

  • Umpire Data: BIS set out to quantify each umpire’s impact on the game. Although fans would bemoan an umpire’s impact regularly, no one had ever been able to accurately measure it until now.

2010

  • DIPS/DIBS: Defense Independent Pitching Statistics and Defense Independent Batting Statistics were introduced to help isolate factors that an individual could control.
  • Command Charting: Began charting pitcher accuracy by charting intended pitch location (catcher glove location before the pitch) and actual location of the pitch.

2011

  • Stolen base analytics: A number of baserunning reports were introduced including the “Red Light/Green Light” report which takes into account pitcher, catcher, and runner to determine how often a steal attempt would be successful.

2012

  • Arm angles: All pitcher’s arm angles/slots were classified and recorded.

2013

  • Minor league package: SIS began applying their cutting-edge data collection and analysis to the AA and AAA levels.
  • Defensive positioning: Creates a report of a batter’s hitting tendencies to show which areas of the field are most important to cover and which can be left vulnerable.
  • Infield alignment: Take a look at a teams defensive tendencies and positioning.
  • Shifts: Who shifts the most, where do players shift, who teams should shift against all fall under this category that has taken the league by storm.
  • Descriptive defense: Player approaches, movement, glove flips and throws. This module on BIS-Data gives insight into every team, player, and play.
  • Play difficulty grades: Introduction of groundbreaking context to stats such as fielding percentage, classifying and recording the fielding difficulty of all balls in play.
  • College play by play: Began tracking event level data for all Division I baseball schools.
  • Base running times: Look at which players have elite speed, who to worry about on the bases, and what situations you should be moving in.
  • Good & bad baserunning: Certain players seem to be a force on the bases, beyond their speed. Conversely, some players seem to run in to outs more than anyone else. Good & bad base running plays help to show which players are giving their team the biggest advantage on the bases.

2014

  • Long throw evaluations: The distance and accuracy of throws meant to cut off runners started to be tracked and recorded.

2015

  • Launched Football Operation: Began covering all NFL and FBS games and subsequently rebranded to “Sports Info Solutions” (SIS) to reflect the coverage of multiple sports.
  • Statcast Data Cleanup: Statcast was a revolutionary tool that gave teams a wealth of data at their fingertips. SIS’s depth of data helped fill in some gaps in the Statcast data to enhance the product considerably.
  • Player Injury Tracking: Started tracking in-game and off the field injuries, providing detailed injury descriptions along with updates to track each player’s progress as they move closer to returning to the field.

2016

  • Independent Quarterback Rating Introduced: An SIS Exclusive metric that better measures performance by accounting for factors outside the quarterback’s control such as receiver drops.
  • Statcast fielding bible: Combined statcast and BIS data to create the most advanced fielder evaluation system ever. Both datasets are used to split a fielder’s credit on a play in to positioning, range, airballs, and throwing – or PART.

2017

  • SIS DataHub launched: The most advanced football data and splits come together in a user-friendly platform that allows users to easily query any situation they desire.
  • XOS Partnership Announced: SIS and XOS partner to make integration possible with the DataHub.

2018

  • Began NPB coverage: SIS applied its detailed charting process to all NPB games to bring all of the most advanced analytics and splits overseas to Japan.
  • Adjusted Blown Block Rate introduced: Each blown block is charted and tracked and then converted into a ratio which is then adjusted based on quality of opposition.
  • On-Target Pass/Catch Percentage introduced: In an effort to separate QB performance from WR performances and vice versa these two metrics were created. On-Target Pass percentage calculates the percent of a quarterback’s passes that were catchable and On-Target Catch percentage only considers passes to a receiver that were deemed catchable.
  • Revolutionary Metric Total Points is introduced: Total Points provides a statistic that allows players to be evaluated across positions. Taking EPA, SIS then distributes value gained or lost on a play to all of the players involved based on their impact to yield total points.

2019

  • Expanded minor league coverage: Moved to include an additional 40% more games, going as far down as Low-A ball making the largest database of advanced MiLB data even more extensive.

2020

  • Began KBO coverage: SIS applied its detailed charting process to all KBO games to bring all of the most advanced analytics and splits overseas to Korea.
  • Launched Basketball Operation
